Meet Maya Premji, our Canada Summer Jobs Marketing Coordinator! Maya is an Honours Public Health student in Brock University's competitive AIM (Acceleration into Master's) Co-op Program, where she's building on her passion for community engagement, leadership, and creating positive change. With experience mentoring young people as a Taekwondo instructor, supporting patients at a busy community health centre, and leading research projects focused on health equity and sustainability, Maya brings creativity, curiosity, and a people-first mindset to the Thrive team. This summer, she's helping us tell the stories of the incredible youth, partners, and communities that make Thrive so special.
What are you most excited to learn or experience during your time at Thrive?
What drew me to Thrive was its incredible dedication to youth leadership, growth, and empowerment. Thrive’s focus and direction towards youth as leaders of tomorrow clearly demonstrates change and impact towards youth and the greater community. As someone who is passionate about media and its connection to Public Health, I was inspired by how Thrive uses creative outlets and art as an expression to instil leadership. I wanted to become a part of that change - a part of a team that doesn’t only share stories, but actively supports and encourages youth to build connections, become confident and develop courage.
I am most excited to gain further experience with various media platforms, as well as leading digital media campaigns and projects. I am also looking forward to the structural and operational changes that I will contribute towards, so that the staff team can navigate shared platforms easier. Finally, I am very excited to connect with the youth directly, as I take live action pictures and videos in program. Hearing their stories, opinions, and experiences, allows my work in marketing to become thoughtful, strategic, and community-focused.
What do you hope to contribute to Thrive’s work and mission over the summer?
I hope to bring creative and innovative ideas to the marketing side of Thrive, allowing for accelerated growth in various social media platforms. My goal is to thoughtfully showcase the heart of Thrive - showing how this organization works towards achieving a strong foundation for youth through the lens of art and creative expression. I hope to also successfully display the mini documentary about Thrive’s 30th anniversary, highlighting its legacy and impact.
What is one skill, perspective, or strength you are excited to bring to the team?
I bring a strong background in community leadership, youth mentorship, creative project design and management. Having previously worked in roles centered on community care and support, as well as youth-focused camps, I am excited to bring perspectives and experiences that can benefit the marketing team and the greater Thrive organization.
What is something people might be surprised to learn about you?
One thing many people do not know about me is that I am a third-degree black belt in Taekwondo and spent over four years teaching martial arts! On a creative note, you can always find me on Canva creating new posters, presentations, and other fun content - it truly is my home away from home!
